But, the same upbringing also contains some traditional absuridites that she can't understand, although her parent's wish that she would adhere to. Teens also share a fairly chaste kiss at a dance. A sub-plot about another wedding is a fun idea -- as are Kazan and Constantine as Toula's parents, warring in late life -- but you almost wish they'd abandoned that gimmick entirely to simply revisit the family in a new and refreshing way. The film cost very little to make and usually second-rate director Joel Zwick ended up running the show. When Toula's father learns, because of a technicality, he and his wife are not married, they decide to get married and as usual the whole thing becomes a circus. The empty-nest plot moves the original storyline forward pleasingly, but we all know how it's going to end before it really even gets started. There are so many similarities to my Fiances family it's almost creepy. Vardalos' screenplay Oscar-nominated was the catalyst that put the film on the map and kept it there permanently. He brings the story and the characters to life with detail and nuance, and in such a way that your senses will kick into full throttle. And although we understand that Grandpa Gus is positioned as an old-world guy who might not quite grasp the idea of feminism and gender equality, his comments feel very dated in a movie trying to be relevant in the here and now. Characters argue loudly, but there's no violence, and language isn't an issue, either.

And it's actually in the reserve Vardalos exhibits in her character that the viewer finds the way inside to Toula's deepest longings and emotions. Especially since we had almost 700 people at our wedding and all we did all night long is dance in circles!!!
